Announcing The Savannahian Publishing, Inc.!

IT'S BEEN a wonderful six months at The Savannahian.

We started our digital alt-weekly in November 2020 in an effort to cover our community more thoughtfully and intentionally.

As we celebrate our anniversary today, we want to share some exciting news with you: we’re filing for nonprofit status!

We’re officially recognized as a domestic nonprofit corporation in the state of Georgia and are waiting to obtain 501c3 status from the IRS.

We’re filing for nonprofit status because we believe it’s the best way forward for our mission.

We care deeply about local journalism. We serve as institutional memory for a city that’s rapidly changing, and we aim to be a trusted source on and advocate for Savannah’s grassroots culture and civic identity.

We can do that through our nonprofit, The Savannahian Publishing, Inc.

We’ve always had big ideas for this little publication we started last year in response to shrinking media resources in Savannah. The Savannahian is just one facet of what we’d like to do.

We’d love to include an educational branch that offers classes and roundtables for budding journalists, as well as a charitable branch that allows us to give back to the community we love.

For now, our nonprofit status will allow us to obtain grant funding and collect tax-exempt donations, both of which will help us pay more writers and cover more issues.

The Savannahian will remain our flagship publication and won’t change much for now: we’ll continue our subscription-based model, and we’ll continue bringing you the content you’ve loved for six months (thank you again!). We’ll keep you posted on our progress along the way.

Thank you for all your support of us and our mission—we quite literally could not have done this without you, and we’re excited to continue on this journey with you.
